a bit of Yeats
I know it's not Poetry Friday, but it is the beginning of September, so I thought of these words from Auden's September 1, 1939:
I sit in one of the dives
On Fifty-second Street
Uncertain and afraid
As the clever hopes expire
Of a low dishonest decade:
Waves of anger and fear
Circulate over the bright
And darkened lands of the earth,
Obsessing our private lives;
The unmentionable odor of death
Offends the September night.....
We must love one another or die.
Here's to a new month--the month of schools beginning and the leaning towards autumnal days.

Hey! Nice calendar!
ReplyDeleteisn't it though?
ReplyDeleteyou'll notice the houseplant is creeping closer as the year goes by--pretty sure by December it will be an interactive calendar!
ReplyDeleteOhh, that Auden. Such a beautiful, awful sentiment from a man who understood the war, and did not live to see "love one another," only ...die. How sad.
