Autopsy in the Form of an Elegy

by John Stone
In the chest
in the heart
was a vessel

was the pulse
was the art
was the love

was the clot
small and slow
and the scar
that could not know

the rest of you
was very nearly perfect.

  1. Hm. Have we had a pulmonary embolism, or a dissection?

The "very nearly" part is the bit that gets you every time. Minus the heart -- almost good enough. Nearly.

  2. I know she's the veriest sugary pop, but this song made me smile (mainly because it's so bee-boppy and I know it's irritating for a sad love song... people love to wallow. Bring Me Down is the name, and the artist is Lenka.

My favorite line? "I won't let this burden bring me down."

  3. ...interesting aside: if you watch Alanis Morisette perform her landmark Angry Female Song on Youtube, and you see her perform it over and over again, in the ensuing years since 1995 when it came out, she sings is more and more softly.

It's really hard to maintain anger over that length of time. Especially when that one guy is SO history, for whom she wrote the song.

Which is why I'm glad you're finding other people's poems and not publishing anything you'll have to look at -- and cross your eyes over -- for the next twenty years.
