ferret funny

from today's paper:  "Ferret Caper.  Police say a homeless man in north Florida stole a ferret from a Jacksonville Beach, Fla., pet store by shoving it down his pants.  (would you stick this animal into any part of your clothing?) And he made it out the door before being challenged.  But a 17-year-old witness confronted suspect Rodney Bolton in the parking lot and was bitten by the animal after the man allegedly shoved it in the teen's face.  That confrontation makes the ferret a 'special weapon' under Florida law.  So Bolton also faces battery charges for dangerously wielding the animal."

be ignited

in the holiday swirl of planning already.  And since it's Poetry Friday, time to share a Mary Oliver selection upon which we're basing our Lessons/Carols.

What I Have Learned So Far

Meditation is old and honorable, so why should I
not sit, every morning of my life, on the hillside,
looking into the shining world?  Because, proper-
ly attended to, delight, as well as havoc, is sug-
gestion.  Can one be passionate about the just, the
ideal, the sublime, and the holy, and yet commit
no labor in its cause?  I don't think so.

All summations have a beginning, all effect has a
story, all kindness begins with the sown seed.
Thought buds toward radiance.  The gospel of
light is the crossroads of--idolence, or action.

Be ignited, or be gone.

beyond thrilled

I thought I had lost this entire series of photos taken on graduation day last May.  Somehow, they just downloaded from my camera with yesterday's photos.  Yeah!  Here's my last glimpse of the Princeton Chapel.

We spent the afternoon at the wondrous Grounds for Sculpture.

Recreation of one of Monet's garden paintings.

day of delights

back to the Arboretum to see if any leaves survived last night's hail and lightening.

enormous 'shroom on the way to lunch

I'd say one of the most serendipitous things of this month was the discovery of Teapot in my neighborhood.  Corn soup was the perfect dish for this chilly and dampish day.

scrrrrrumption Manchurian tofu, no I hadn't heard of that adjective before, but it was divine.

The penny today was found in the change machine at Safeway, after the pineapple was purchased.  It was joined by it's Canadian cousin.  So, now I have $.06 towards my Olypmic funding.

grey days

I notice that colours pop more when it's outwardly dreary.

who says one can't have a candle-lit breakfast?  Am enjoying my fine jack-o-lantern from my Mondavi years.

Interesting that I was just thinking/writing about the Winter Olympics this morning and today's coin was a Canadian dime!

day of riches

with this apocryphal sunrise, I was fully expecting to see at least a couple of horsemen today...but church and the first children's choir rehearsal went well.

Rainier had an amazing flare on the eastern side; hard to see with this wee camera shot.

some things, I just don't ask about...

and sing along 'Tis the last roooose of summmmer, all covered with'?  I don't remember, dew?  Anyway, these were lovely and blooming on the campus of Seattle University as I strolled down the hill to my favorite book store.

This is the Sorrento, one of Seattle's oldest hotels.  Seems they host very cool events; I would love to go to the Chamber vs. Chamber one in November.

Another view of the Central Library.

And down the very steep hills; I'm telling you, this place is every bit as steep as SF.  Found a penny in the bricks, shortly after I took this shot.

interesting lights along the sidewalk; they changed colours randomly.

Yes, I keep trying to capture the gorgeousness of autumn.  The photos never come close to conveying what it is like to be standing right there.

Nirvana, otherwise know as The Elliott Bay Book Company.  Bliss!

delights of this day

fresh pomegranate juice from Cali--quite tasty!

Had a frenzy of unpacking and rearranging of the flat today; found these Mexican ceramic tiled knobs in a box.  Had completely forgotten about them--they were purchased from a great pottery place in Berkeley for a friend who was no longer in my life by the time the festive season occurred.  What a happy thing to discover them, all these years later.  They add such zest to my rather corporate place.  Yes, the view is stunning, but the actual room feels very hotel-like.  Without the maid/room service!

"How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone."

Yesterday's outing was to see this intriguing movie Coco avant Chanel.   Despite the miles walked, no coins were found.  But the red and gold leaves were still vividly valiant in the face of pouring rain.

merely players

  Gravity

by Louis Jenkins

It turns out that the drain pipe from the sink is attached to
nothing and water just runs right onto the ground in the
crawl space underneath the house and then trickles out
into the stream that passes through the backyard. It turns
out that the house is not really attached to the ground but
sits atop a few loose concrete blocks all held in place by
gravity, which, as I understand it, means "seriousness." Well,
this is serious enough. If you look into it further you will
discover that the water is not attached to anything either
and that perhaps the rocks and the trees are not all that
firmly in place. The world is a stage. But don't try to move
anything. You might hurt yourself, besides that's a job for
the stagehands and union rules are strict. You are merely a
player about to deliver a soliloquy on the septic system to a
couple dozen popple trees and a patch of pale blue sky.

sitting still

Autumn Waiting

by Tom Hennen

Cold wind.
The day is waiting for winter
Without a sound.
Everything is waiting—
Broken-down cars in the dead weeds.
The weeds themselves.
Trees.
Even sunlight
Is in no hurry and stays
For a long time
On each cornstalk.
Blackbirds are silent
And sit in piles.
From a distance
They look like
Something
Spilled on the road.
